🎪🎙️ LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. FRIENDS AND FAMILY. BLIND FOLKS, SIGHTED FOLKS, AUDIO DESCRIPTION SNOBS, ADVOCATES, TROUBLEMAKERS, AND EVERYONE IN BETWEEN. 🎙️🎪
STEP RIGHT UP. THIS SUNDAY , THE BIG TOP IS OPENING.
After years of somehow circling around one another without ever actually sitting down together, the long anticipated conversation has FINALLY happened.
In one corner.
🥊 The Bad Boy of Blind, Anthony Corona.
And in the other.
🥊 The bubbly beauty behind Blindy Girl, Serina Gilbert.
What happens when you put two fired up personalities, two advocates, two people who are not particularly interested in keeping their opinions tucked neatly inside the lines, and two microphones together?
Apparently you get part Fourth of July fireworks. 🎆
Part advocacy rally. 📣
Part therapy session.
Part comedy show. 😂
And a WHOLE lot of fun.
Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Conversation One.
Yes. Conversation ONE.
Because somewhere along the way, Serina and I realized there was absolutely no chance we were getting everything into one conversation.
And believe me, we tried.
Serina shares her journey with retinitis pigmentosa and what it meant to grow into her identity as a blind woman.
We talk about family, acceptance, independence, employment, vocational rehabilitation, advocacy, and the complicated business of figuring out exactly who you are when the world has plenty of opinions about who it thinks you should be.
We talk about representation.
We talk about Nothing About Us Without Us.
We talk about Blindy Girl and how humor, honesty, lived experience, and a strategically deployed little bit of snark can educate, challenge assumptions, and build community.
And then we enter one of my favorite rabbit holes.
🎧 AUDIO DESCRIPTION. 🎧
Serina takes us behind the curtain of her work as a blind Audio Description Quality Control Specialist and explains why blind people belong inside the creative and quality control process, not simply waiting at the finish line to consume what somebody else has decided is good enough for us.
We talk about what makes audio description work.
What makes it fail.
Why Serina proudly calls herself an Audio Description Snob.
And what Nothing About Us Without Us really looks like when blind professionals have meaningful seats at the table.
We laugh.
We get serious.
We wander off course.
We find our way back.
And occasionally we discover that going off course was actually where the good stuff was hiding.
Basically, it is Sunday Edition exactly the way Sunday Edition is supposed to be.
Serina is vulnerable, funny, thoughtful, passionate, and wonderfully willing to go wherever the conversation takes us.
And by the time we were finished, there was only one conclusion.
We are absolutely doing this again.
🎪 So step right up, folks.
