THE PRACTICE OF HAPPY
APPENDIX
PRACTICAL TOOLS FOR CONVERSATION, REFLECTION AND FACILITATION
This appendix is exactly what it sounds like.
A tool.
A resource.
A conversation guide.
A collection of concepts, exercises, questions and practical prompts created through The Practice of Happy series and presented by the Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts and Digital Media Content Services.
This recording brings together the exercises and guided questions explored throughout our final conversation and places them in one practical companion resource.
Use the appendix in its entirety to create your own event or facilitated conversation, select individual exercises for personal or group reflection, or adapt the material to meet the needs of your community.
The goal is exploration.
The appendix includes practical tools for examining emotional management, internal reactions, outside influences, personal decision making and the space between reaction and response.
It asks us to think about several important ideas.
Defining the space.
Cleaning the space.
Owning the space.
Owning our own reactions.
Understanding what we are feeling.
Recognizing what may be influencing those feelings.
Examining what happens internally before we respond.
Identifying the outcome we actually want.
And choosing what we want to do next.
The exercises include guided emotional inventories, internal behavior questions, influence and manipulation checklists, the emotional table, internal conversation exercises, mirror and map reflections and practical scenarios designed to bring the concepts into real life.
These are not rules.
They are not prescriptions.
They are not written in stone.
No two people process emotion, conflict, happiness, grief, frustration, joy or outside influence in exactly the same way.
Together, these concepts can help you develop your own roadmap.
Your own checklist.
Your own internal conversation.
Your own Practice of Happy.
As a facilitation tool, the recording provides the questions, exercises and conversation guidance needed to lead participants through the process.
Pause when conversation needs room.
Explore the responses.
Spend more time where the discussion takes you.
The goal is not to arrive at the same answer.
The goal is to create enough space to understand ourselves and one another a little more clearly.

The Practice of Happy is not about pretending everything is positive.
It is not about ignoring anger, sadness, fear, grief, frustration, disappointment or conflict.
It is about recognizing what is in the room.
Understanding what deserves attention.
Deciding what influence we want those feelings to have.
And remembering that our first reaction does not always have to become our final response.
Feel it.
Name it.
Understand it.
Sort it.
Own it.
Choose what comes next.
This appendix is presented by the Sunday Edition Family of Podcasts and Digital Media Content Services as a practical tool for further exploration of emotional management, defining the space, cleaning the space, owning the space and owning our own reactions.
