THE TOAST
Some stories are meant to be heard.
Others linger.
And some, apparently, refuse to leave you alone until you finally let them out into the world.
The Toast is lush, romantic, funny, tender, and occasionally heartbreaking, a story about love, life, the choices we make, and the moments we don’t realize will matter until long after they’ve passed.
Three men and a little lady. A pack of absolutely adorable dogs. And one rather complicated question: Who belongs with whom, who belongs to whom, and who deserves a happily ever after?
Surround them with friendship, romance, laughter, heartbreak, complicated histories, unexpected turns, and those wonderfully ordinary moments that somehow become the ones we remember most.
There are life lessons tucked between the laughter. Heartbreak hiding around a few corners. Dogs who understand considerably more than anyone gives them credit for. And at the center of it all, people trying to navigate love, loss, hope, friendship, family, and everything that happens in between.
This story came back to me.
Not all at once. Not with some grand announcement. It simply began nagging at me again, quietly at first and then persistently, as though these characters had decided they’d waited long enough.
The Toast is not based on anyone’s lived experience. These characters are mine. The story is mine.
But some of the feelings are borrowed.
The original spark came from a real-life, full-circle story of love that touched me deeply. Something about it stayed with me, and eventually those feelings found their way into fictional characters, different lives, and a story entirely their own.
I wrote The Toast years ago and then put it away.
At the time, I don’t think I had found the voice to give the story the meaning I felt it deserved. Sometimes the writing is finished before the writer is.
Maybe some stories have their own timing.
Maybe we don’t always understand why something from our past suddenly reaches forward and asks to be looked at again.
Whatever the reason, this one wanted another life.
So I listened.
And now, after all these years, The Toast is finally being birthed into life.
We don’t want to tell you too much.
This is one of those stories best entered without a map.
Pour something you love. Find a comfortable place. Put on your headphones and give yourself permission to disappear for a while.
Meet three men, a little lady, and a pack of dogs.
Stay for everything that happens when lives become tangled together.
Because The Toast isn’t simply about what happens.
It’s about what remains after it does.
It’s about the people who change us. The moments that stay with us. The things we understand only after enough life has happened to teach us how to understand them.
And when the final words have been spoken, don’t be surprised if you sit there for another moment before reaching for the stop button.
The Toast.
A story that may leave you thinking.
But more importantly, feeling.
